Athletics and Wellness

At a time when many American children are struggling with inactivity and budgetary shortfalls have forced most public schools to cut physical education and sports, LBUSD remains committed to programs that promote the lifelong fitness, as well as the social well-being, of its students.  In addition, kids who participate in athletics and physical education, and who possess healthy social and emotional skills, are able to focus on academics.

A Big Win for LBHS Athletics

LBHS athletic programs received $49,030 in SchoolPower funding last year, including Campaign donor designated funds to specific athletic booster programs. The SchoolPower money is something that Athletic Director Mike Churchill says “is desperately needed to maintain and extend our commitment to the 60% of the student body that participate in athletics at Laguna Beach High.” The Hexberg family’s second annual $25,000 gift, along with SchoolPower’s additional $10,000 gift, funded pool area bleachers, girls’ lockers and weight room equipment used by multiple teams and hundreds of athletes. Greg Hexberg said his family is “honored to support these kids, coaches and programs as they continue their search for excellence.” Go Breakers!

Wave Rider Café: A Healthy Investment

The new Thurston Wave Rider Café is designed to offer students grab-and-go nutritious foods. The café, created with menu and design input from students, nutrition staff and a consulting dietician, is described by LBUSD’s Chief Business Officer Dean West as “inspired and worthy of Orange County’s best middle school.” The spring ribbon-cutting ceremony (pictured) celebrated the opening of the café and the generosity of Chantal and Stephen J. Cloobeck, who donated $100,000 to benefit our school district’s food program. Funds donated by the Cloobeck family were also directed to nutrition staff training and a dietician/consultant to enhance menu offerings at all four schools.

"The money raised by SchoolPower directly impacts our ability to service our athletes through the new Champions of Character program, facilities improvements, equipment upgrades, and the creation of our aerobic/plyometric room".With the support of SchoolPower, our athletic program is able to compete with schools much larger than LBHS.  The results of these efforts include fewer injuries, winning programs, and the nurturing of positive character traits."  -- Don Austin, LBHS principal
