At a time when many American children are struggling with inactivity and budgetary shortfalls have forced most public schools to cut physical education and sports, LBUSD remains committed to programs that promote the lifelong fitness, as well as the social well-being, of its students. In addition, kids who participate in physical education and who possess healthy social and emotional skills are able to focus on academics.
LBHS 2010 from Golf Classic/Community Campaign
|
"The money raised by SchoolPower directly impacts our ability to service our athletes through the new Champions of Character program, facilities improvements, equipment upgrades, and the creation of our aerobic/plyometric room".With the support of SchoolPower, our athletic program is able to compete with schools much larger than LBHS. The results of these efforts include fewer injuries, winning programs, and the nurturing of positive character traits." — Don Austin, LBHS principal |

LBHS ATHLETICS
There is little doubt that Laguna Beach High School sports would suffer without SchoolPower — the largest annual contributor to LBHS athletics.
In addition to supporting academics at all four schools, the SchoolPower Golf Classic earmarks 20% of its proceeds to the High School Athletic Booster Program each year. The sports programs receive more in donor designations during the Community Campaign as donors at a certain level can choose a specific teacher or program they'd like their money to go to. Many choose their child's high school team.
All sports benefit from the above SchoolPower funding.
Baseball, Boys Basketball, Girls Basketball, Cross Country, Football, Boys Soccer, Girls Soccer, Softball, Boys/Girls Swimming, Boys Tennis, Girls Tennis, Cheer, Track, Boys Volleyball, Girls Volleyball, Boys Water Polo and Girls Water Polo — all receive funding from SchoolPower. This wide array of sports allows students to find their passion, learn to work with others and develop habits that will encourage a healthy life including fitness.
THURSTON ATHLETICS
"Thurston's physical education program is one of the best in the state. The support we receive from SchoolPower puts us into an elite category." — Dr. Joanne Culverhouse, Thurston Principal
Polar Heart Rate Technology
The SchoolPower Polar Heart Rate Teacher Grant enables kids to check their heart rate as they exercise. Dr. Culverhouse explains, "The heart rate monitors allow kids to explore a variety of ways to push themselves and help them to incorporate lifelong fitness into their daily habits. Teachers will have the ability to collect data on each child as it pertains to their fitness level and educate them on how their heart rate implacts their overall health.”
Thurston Climbing Wall
In 2006, Thurston Middle School became home to a state-of-the-art climbing wall — funded entirely by SchoolPower. Teacher Penny Dressler explains, "We are using the walls and challenge ropes course for our 8th graders in a climbing unit. 6th and 7th graders are given an introduction and taste of the challenge course so that they are excited about it and ready to be trained to rappel their peers in the 8th grade… This is an excellent way for students to build upper body strength and confidence at the same time." Dressler adds, "Thank goodness we have an organization like SchoolPower that supported us in dreaming big."
