REALTORS & Lumberyard Grow SchoolPower Business Alliance

"There has always been a strong connection in Laguna Beach between our business and school communities", notes SchoolPower V.P. Business Alliance, Marcus Skenderian. "Now, more than ever, we are focusing on ways we can support each other."

SchoolPower's year-old Business Alliance is taking root thanks to returning sponsors like Hearts of Montage and Laguna Beach Magazine and two brand new Business Alliance members - Lumberyard and the Laguna Board of REALTORS. SchoolPower has also revitalized its Laguna Locals Card program, which encourages school families to shop locally and receive discounts at participating businesses. Its Student Directory - a.k.a. "the best read book in town" -- remains an essential tool connecting parents to each other, local businesses and the schools.

SchoolPower's Business Alliance is comprised of community-minded businesses that support all four Laguna Beach schools with a significant annual financial contribution. In presenting its generous $5,000 check to SchoolPower, the Laguna Board of REALTORS noted the long-standing relationship between Laguna realtors and our schools. President Wayne Woodyard explains, "Laguna Beach is known for its schools. The Board of REALTORS prides itself on giving back to the community and SchoolPower is doing great things for Laguna Beach children."

New SchoolPower Business Alliance member Lumberyard hosted its first annual SchoolPower Chef Challenge on Monday, November 9th. Owners Cary and Suzanne Redfearn brilliantly created and orchestrated the event that had Thurston principal, Dr. Joanne Culverhouse, and LBHS principal, Dr. Don Austin, pitted against each other in a battle of menus. Lumberyard chef, Armando Ortega, brought the principals' choices to life. The 147 people in attendance were asked to choose between Dr. Culverhouse's "surf" or Dr. Austin's "turf" selections. When no one could consume another bite of their five-course meal, the diners voted and Dr. Culverhouse was declared the winner. Dr. Austin was awarded a bucket of cleaning supplies to wash Dr. Culverhouse's car and Dr. Culverhouse ran several victory laps around the restaurant. She was not the only winner. Nearly $10,000 was contributed to SchoolPower to support educational programs for Laguna Beach children.
